March Updates: Calendar, Report Cards, Surveys
Here is the March 2011 calendar.
It is also in the Digital Locker on your Teacher Ease account. I handed out calendars to students Wednesday afternoon as they left the building, and I was very disapointed to notice how many calendars were on the sidewalk and street outside of school a few minutes later. Littering is a greivous response to the minor inconvenience of being handed a piece of paper on the way out the door. I feel conscience-stricken over the many acts of senseless littering that took place mere steps from WJPS.
On Friday, March 4, 2011 students will be given their second term, mid-term grades. Attached to the report card is a letter about Portfolio Conferences which are being held on Friday, March 18, 2011 in the afternoon and evening. There is a tear-off on the letter that you can return to your child's advisor to reserve an appointment slot. Please send in the tear-off by Friday, March 11 - or sooner! Friday, March 18 is also a half-day of school for all students. They will be dismissed at 11:15 am.
Monday, March 7 at 7:00 pm is the next PTA Meeting. Ideal Uniform Company will be here to measure students and take uniform orders. They will bring samples of all the uniform items so you can see them first hand and get a feel for how they fit.
The Middle School Science Fair will be held on Friday, March 18 during Portfolio Conferences. Students were challenged to produce environmentally friendly presentations, so instead of posters and oak tag, expect to see Power Point, video and on-line computer graphics!
Parent/guardian school surveys will be distributed during the Portfolio Conferences.
WJPS is proud to be one of three schools invited city-wide to participate in an all day Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Youth Leadership Conference on Tuesday, March 22 aboard the Intrepid Museum. Our middle school girls will meet with a dozen women speakers and mentors, have lunch in the mess deck, and enjoy an interactive tour of the ship.
These are just a few of the activities at WJPS during March!

Family Game Night Pictures
We had a great Family Game Night! I posted a few pictures to the blog at
http://www.wjpsfamilygamenight.blogspot.com/
We will do the drawing for the door prizes when we get back from break.
I hope you all have a chance to spend some quality time with your families and loved ones during the break. Games are different each time you play them, so you and your family will have a new experience every time. Use the vacation to play a few games together. There are some fun recipes on the blog, too!
Regards,
Mrs. Reed

Uniform Updates
Scholastic School Uniforms has gone out of business. However, the former owner has promised to fulfill all outstanding orders. He has dropped off parts of people's orders at school, but acknowledges that many items are still outstanding. We distributed whatever he dropped off to the names he provided.
The PTA interviewed several uniform companies in the area, and selected Ideal Uniform Company and Lands' End School Uniforms to be WJPS school uniform providers. You may work with whichever company you choose to select WJPS school uniform pieces for your child.
Ideal Uniform Company
516-354-8255
1271 Hempstead Turnpike
Elmont, NY
Mon-Sat, 10 am to 7 pm
Sun, 11 am to 6 pm
Ideal Uniform Company is a local New York business that has been family run for over 80 years. There are stores in Brooklyn and the Bronx in addition to the new location in Elmont. We have already had one “measuring night” at school with Ideal. In addition to measuring kids, they brought bags and bags of blank items in all different sizes for students to try on. They will be returning again in a few weeks.
Order forms and price lists are available in the school office.

WJPS is school #900141987
Enable cookies on your browser
Go to www.landsend.com
In the left-hand column, click on “Look up your school.”
Click the “Preferred School Number” Tab at the top
Enter School Number 900141987
Click on the orange box “Shop using this dress code.”
The World Journalism Preparatory School page opens up.
To add the embroidered school logo, Lands’ End adds $5.50 to each item. To add the screen-printed school logo (t-shirt, sweatpants, etc.), it is $2.50.
For example, a basic Lands’ End School Uniform T-shirt is $9.50. With the WJPS logo, it is $12.00 ($9.50 + $2.50). The logo charges are added separately at the bottom of the “shopping cart.”
From now until February 11, 2010, Lands’ End is charging only a penny to add the school logo to the WJPS logo items.
The Sears store at 9605 Queens Boulevard in Rego Park (718-830-5900) carries Lands’ End merchandise (without a WJPS logo) and you can go there to try on clothes to find what size fits best. You can place a school uniform order on the computer in the Lands’ End kiosk in the Sears store and get free shipping, but don’t forget to use school #900141987. The Lands’ End website and catalog have size charts to help you determine proper sizing, and customer service is a phone call away.
There are a few additional WJPS logo items available from Lands’ End: polo shirts in mesh and cotton interlock, open bottom sweatpants for girls, lots of different styles of pants for boys and girls, feminine fit tops for girls, and three styles of gym shorts for everyone. Lands’ End does not offer the t-shirt in gold, so if you want a gold WJPS t-shirt, you need to order it from Ideal Uniform Company.
Please feel free to log on to www.landsend.com/schools and explore the WJPS School Uniform section of the website. Sign up for email alerts and you will get notices of sales and special offers.
Please contact me if you have any questions or need more information.
