Dear WJPS Community,
We have a generic school supply list for all students, except the 9th grade, which has its own supply list. The lists are available in your "digital locker" on TeacherEase.com. They can also be downloaded by clicking on the following links:

Here are the items on the lists: (9th grade - read all the way to the end for your additional items)

General List:

• 3-ring loose-leaf binder depending on student/teacher preference). If used, it should be stocked with dividers and loose-leaf paper
• blue or black ink ballpoint pens
• #2 pencils
• Post-It Notes (5-pack assorted sizes)
• 1 pack of graph paper
• 12-inch ruler
• compass and protractor
• Calculator (see below for type):
• High School: graphing
• Middle School: Scientific (Texas Instruments)
• 5 Marble Composition Books - 100 sheet each
• Glue Stick
• 5 folders with pockets
• 1 pack of index cards
• 1 6 or 12 pack of washable markers

We are no longer able to provide the following items, so students should bring their own if needed:

Only school combination locks are used on student lockers. They will be available for a non-refundable, one-time only, rental fee of $5.oo, to be collected on the first day of school.

The following donated items would be greatly appreciated. They can be brought to advisory class during the first few days of school. Please mark them clearly with student's full name and grade: tissues, hand sanitizer, loose-leaf paper, ball point pens, washable markers and 8 1/2 X 11 inch copy paper.

At WJPS, we incorporate technology into the classroom, and most teachers have a class website that students can access day or night. Oftentimes, assignments can be uploaded, downloaded, emailed, blogged, attached, ninged, jinged or word processed, double spaced in 12-point type! A graduation gift of a FlipVideo or other video camera or a laptop computer will be a great investment for a student!

Open Mic Night at Barnes & Noble on Friday, June 18 at 7 pm at Bay Terrace Shopping Center, 23-80 Bell Blvd.

Friday, June 18 at 7:00 pm is Open Microphone Night at Barnes & Noble in the Bay Terrace Shopping Center, 23-80 Bell Boulevard. All students are invited to come and read aloud something they have written: poem, short story, narrative piece, newspaper article, etc. You can even bring your laptop to show a video or other electronic media you produced! All participants will be entered to win gift certificates to Barnes & Noble.

This is also a fundraising event for WJPS. We will receive a percentage of sales made when a special voucher is turned in at the cash register. Food and beverages at the cafe count for our fundraiser IF YOU USE A VOUCHER! You can click on links at the bottom of this page and print vouchers to bring with you to the store. The fundraiser is from 9 am to 9 pm at the store, but is active for five (5) days online!!!

When making purchases online, use Book Fair ID# 10203040 at the check out page, and WJPS will receive a percentage of the online sale on June 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22! You can forward this information to friends and relatives who live in other cities across the country.

New Student Orientation, June 8, 2010 at 1:00 pm

WJPS is hosting an orientation for incoming 6th and 9th graders on Tuesday, June 8 (it is a half day of instruction for elementary and middle schools).

The orientation is from 1:00 pm to 2:45 pm at WJPS. The school uniform company will be there from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm to measure students for uniforms. A $25 deposit is required on any uniform orders placed then. Checks should be made out to Scholastic School Uniforms.

School Lunch Accounts Need to Be Paid Up!

Please pay your school lunch account by May 14, 2010.

The white kiosk in the cafeteria takes cash and gives a receipt. Every time a student inputs his/her Personal Identification Number into the keypad at the front of the cafeteria line, the lunch balance is shown. Unpaid lunch balances can have a negative impact on our school, so please make every effort to pay for your lunch.

Parent Workshops Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010

March College Trip - UPDATE

The College Overnight Trip is open to all 11th and 10th grade students. The trip is scheduled for March 3-4, 2010, and includes visits to SUNY Albany, SUNY Oneonta, Siena College and Marist College.

The cost is $165.00 and includes transportation in a deluxe Coach bus, overnight accomodations at the Hampton Inn in Oneonata and all meals.

The campus visit is an important part of the college decision process. Visiting different colleges gives a student a better understanding of which type of college is right for him/her. The tours are guided not only by college personnel, but by WJPS staff members.

This particular trip has been designed to expose students to four different types of colleges. It is not just for students interested in these particular schools. SUNY Albany is a school campus in an urban setting, while Oneonta is a SUNY school in a more rural area. Siena and Marist are both private colleges - Siena being a smaller of the two. Students will be encouraged to consider which type of college might be the best match for them.

Once students are confirmed for the trip, they will meet at least once before the trip to discuss what to look for at each campus and what questions to ask.

Middle School to attend "Footsteps from Before" at Queens College, February 24

In honor of Black History Month, all middle school students will be attending the play, "Footsteps from Before" at Queens College on W.ednesday, February 24, 2010. There is a $5.00 fee that should be turned in with the permission slip by Friday, January 22, 2010 to the student's advisor.


"Footsteps from Before" is a historical play written by actor Lou Myers, who appeared on television in "A Different World" and on Broadway in "The Color Purple". The play brings to life the historical voices of Booker T. Washington, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, John Brown and Nat Turner.

College Trip: March 3-4, Upstate NY

Attention 11th grade students and their parents/guardians:

We are pleased to offer an overnight trip to tour colleges in upstate New York: SUNY Albany, Oneonta, Delhi and Marist College in Poughkeepsie. The trip takes place on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 through Thursday, March 4, 2010. The cost is $165.00 and includes transportation on a deluxe coach bus, lunch at SUNY Albany, dinner at SUNY Oneonta, breakfast and overnight stay at Hampton Inn in Oneonta and lunch at SUNY Delhi.

The cost must be paid in cash or money order made out to World Journalism Preparatory School. Additional money will be needed for snacks, souvenirs and personal expenses.

Seats are available on a first come first served basis for the first 50 students who bring their payment and parental consent form to Ms. Poulos in the College Suite, room 324, starting immediately and ending Friday, January 22, 2010. Money will be accepted from 8:30 am to 9:00 am only. Please contact Ms. Poulos, Mr. Lumetta or Ms. Reed for more information.

Blood Drive Wednesday, Jan. 20, 12-6 pm

Parents/Guardians and students who are 16 years old and older are encouraged to participate in our first ever Blood Drive! Please call the school at 718-461-2219 and make an appointment for between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Wednesday, January 20. The Blood Drive is open to the community, so family members and friends are invited!

Donors who are 16 years old need a signed permission form in order to donate blood. The form is available in the main office. A sample of the form is shown above. Photocopies or reprints of it will not be accepted.

An Evening with Alan November

Please join us on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 7:00 pm as we welcome Mr. Alan November to WJPS. Mr. November will hold a seminar in which we will learn how our kids use computers, cell phones and Ipods for learning, communicating and entertainment.

Mr. November is an acclaimed educator, author and technology expert who has been a dorm counselor for at-risk students, a teacher, a technology coordinator, an alternative school director, and an education consultant. He is the author of Empowering Students with Technology, and his newest book is Web Literacy for Educators. He has won numerous awards, but is most proud to have been selected one of the original national Christa McAuliffe Educators.

I had the pleasure of attending one of Mr. November's workshops last year. He is warm, funny, engaging, and very serious about students and technology. If your child has access to a computer, cell phone, mp3 player or camera, you should make time to come see Mr. November at WJPS! Come and figure out such topics as:

• Do you know what your kids know (about the Internet, cell phone features)?
• Learn the "grammar" of the internet (who controls content on websites?)
• How we can all expand the boundaries of learning
