College Trip: March 3-4, Upstate NY

Attention 11th grade students and their parents/guardians:

We are pleased to offer an overnight trip to tour colleges in upstate New York: SUNY Albany, Oneonta, Delhi and Marist College in Poughkeepsie. The trip takes place on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 through Thursday, March 4, 2010. The cost is $165.00 and includes transportation on a deluxe coach bus, lunch at SUNY Albany, dinner at SUNY Oneonta, breakfast and overnight stay at Hampton Inn in Oneonta and lunch at SUNY Delhi.

The cost must be paid in cash or money order made out to World Journalism Preparatory School. Additional money will be needed for snacks, souvenirs and personal expenses.

Seats are available on a first come first served basis for the first 50 students who bring their payment and parental consent form to Ms. Poulos in the College Suite, room 324, starting immediately and ending Friday, January 22, 2010. Money will be accepted from 8:30 am to 9:00 am only. Please contact Ms. Poulos, Mr. Lumetta or Ms. Reed for more information.

Blood Drive Wednesday, Jan. 20, 12-6 pm

Parents/Guardians and students who are 16 years old and older are encouraged to participate in our first ever Blood Drive! Please call the school at 718-461-2219 and make an appointment for between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Wednesday, January 20. The Blood Drive is open to the community, so family members and friends are invited!

Donors who are 16 years old need a signed permission form in order to donate blood. The form is available in the main office. A sample of the form is shown above. Photocopies or reprints of it will not be accepted.

An Evening with Alan November

Please join us on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 7:00 pm as we welcome Mr. Alan November to WJPS. Mr. November will hold a seminar in which we will learn how our kids use computers, cell phones and Ipods for learning, communicating and entertainment.

Mr. November is an acclaimed educator, author and technology expert who has been a dorm counselor for at-risk students, a teacher, a technology coordinator, an alternative school director, and an education consultant. He is the author of Empowering Students with Technology, and his newest book is Web Literacy for Educators. He has won numerous awards, but is most proud to have been selected one of the original national Christa McAuliffe Educators.

I had the pleasure of attending one of Mr. November's workshops last year. He is warm, funny, engaging, and very serious about students and technology. If your child has access to a computer, cell phone, mp3 player or camera, you should make time to come see Mr. November at WJPS! Come and figure out such topics as:

• Do you know what your kids know (about the Internet, cell phone features)?
• Learn the "grammar" of the internet (who controls content on websites?)
• How we can all expand the boundaries of learning

Senior Dance

College Financial Planning Night

Juniors and Seniors and their families are invited to attend a college financial planning night on Wednesday, December 16, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. We are excited to welcome Ms. Lucila A. Villaquiran, Associate Director of Financial Aid from Columbia University.

Ms. Villaquiran will cover such topics as how and when to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), what to look for in the SAR (Student Aid Report), the types of Federal Work-Study Programs that are available, and how loans, grants and scholarships can be utilized.

If time permits, there will also be a Question & Answer segment.

It is very important that we have a count of everyone who is coming so we can have enough handouts available.
