Community Education Council Meeting

Community Education Councils represent parents at the district level. WJPS parents are represented by the Community Education Council for District 25 (CEC25) and the Citywide Council on High Schools (CCHS). The councils hold public meetings once a month. The CEC25 meeting is this Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 pm at the DOE offices at 30-48 Linden Place, Flushing, NY. Most of their meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month. A portion of each meeting is set aside so that members of the public may publicly speak to the council.

In other parts of the country, the CEC would be considered a local school board. The CEC is a deliberative body that helps to shape educational priorities and policies in District 25.  Members are volunteers who provide hands-on leadership and support for public schools.  There are 9 parent members who are elected by the PTA officers in all schools in the district, there are 2 members who are appointed by the Queens Borough President, and there is 1 high school senior who is appointed by the Community Superintendent.

CEC parent members are representative of public school parents.  They live or work in the community and send their children to the local schools, and their role is to reflect the needs and wishes of the community regarding the education of its children.

You are encouraged to attend a CEC meeting to meet these outstanding volunteers and learn more about how they shape educational policy in our district.

The agenda for the upcoming meeting is available for you here:

PORTRAIT DAY, November 10, 2008

School Portrait Day is
November 10, 2008!

Picture packages are available by pre-paying for them, and bringing the order form and payment to school on Portrait Day to give to the photographer. If you purchase a package, the photographs are scheduled to be delivered before the winter holidays.

All students are photographed because we use the pictures for school ID cards and the yearbook.  You do not have to purchase a picture package, but this is a fundraiser for WJPS, and your support is greatly appreciated.  Order forms and envelopes are being sent home with students shortly.  Please note that a soft blue background has already been chosen and it is the only background available.

If your original order form and envelope are misplaced before November 10, you can print copies of them, fill them out and enclose payment in an envelope to bring to school on November 10.

Here they are in pdf format:

Students are expected to wear full dress uniform of blazer, button-down shirt (worn buttoned up under the blazer) and khaki, black or navy trousers/skirt for their portraits.  For students who have gym on November 10, we will call that grade early so they are fresh and neat for their pictures.

Students will be photographed individually and by advisory.  To keep everything running smoothly and on time, we ask that students cooperate by courteously following the direction of school and photography staff members.  To get the best picture possible, please work out your hairstyle, make-up and accessories between now and November 10.  Neck scarves and chunky earrings and necklaces can be distracting in a still photograph, so give these some thought before wearing them for your portrait.  Please come to the auditorium already prepared to have your portrait taken as there will be no time for trips to the bathroom or student lockers.  A schedule will be posted before Portrait Day so you will have an idea of when your grade will be called.

The photographer will collect payment envelopes as pictures are taken.  Envelopes will not be accepted or held in advance by teachers.  WJPS is not responsible for misplaced payment envelopes.  We strongly discourage bringing cash to school, so please make every effort to pay by check, money order or credit card.

Parent volunteers are needed for the morning and afternoon of November 10 to help out. Please contact me by phone at school, 718-461-2219 or email at hreed2@schools.nyc.gov if you are able to lend a hand.  If you have any questions or need more information about Portrait Day, please do not hesitate to contact me.

PTA UPDATE

Dear WJPS Family,

The WJPS PTA is very active on behalf of all WJPS families.  They have planned several activities for the coming weeks, and I think you will enjoy them all.

PTA fundraising events are very important because they supplement the school's budget.  Your support will help the PTA meet its goal of raising $10,000.00 for WJPS.  Debra Agin-Shine and Antonella Villa are your PTA Co-Presidents.  They are always on the look-out for activities that students and their parents/guardians can do together that are fun and also just happen to raise funds for the school.

If you would like to learn more about the PTA, and volunteer for upcoming events, please call the school at 718-461-2219 and leave a message for Debbie and Antonella, or send them an email to wjpspta@gmail.com.

Last week, several PTA volunteers were at school copying, collating and stapling booklets of flyers for students to bring home.  If your packet didn't make it home, you can download copies here in .pdf format:

Monday, November 3, 2008, PTA Meeting

Tuesday, November 4 Pizzeria UNO fundraiser
(you need to bring the coupon to the restaurant)

Wednesday, November 26, Holiday Boutique

Friday, December 5, Holiday Dinner

Saturday, January 31, Dinner and Disco

If you have any questions or need more information, please don't hesitate to contact Debbie and Antonella.
